In Iran, people usually refer to prices in Toman, and it is very common to remove zeros when mentioning amounts. For example, a sandwich may cost 400,000 Tomans, which equals 4,000,000 Rials. However, a menu or a local person may simply write or say “400”.

This does not mean 400 Tomans. It means 400,000 Tomans. Removing zeros from prices is a common habit in Iran and helps people communicate more easily in daily life.

This becomes especially important when using payment machines. Travelers should always make sure that the correct amount and the correct number of zeros are entered before confirming a payment.

If a price is unclear, asking again is completely normal. Iranian people are familiar with this situation and are usually happy to help visitors.
